History Of Tajweed

“And we have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?”

(Surah Al-Qamar, verse 17)

When the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), it was recited in a certain way so that people can learn and understand it easily. But with the changing time and intermixing of the culture, the root language has undergone many changes. However, it was around the 4th century (after Hijri) that reciting the Quran with Tajweed developed as a separate science.

Reciting the Quran with Tajweed helps the reciter in perfect grammar and pronunciation. And it is very much stressed by many Sahabas also. There were no harakat or dots in the primitive Arabic scriptures. The signs were added by the famous scholar Abul Aswad al-Du’ali for perfecting grammar, under the guidance and Caliphate period of Ali R.A.

Many scholars such as Seebaway, Al Khaleel, and Mazahem Khaqani molded the course of Tajweed both directly and indirectly (not using the word Tajweed) and called it Husn ul Ada. The modern course has the importance of reciting the Quran with Tajweed as it restores the true essence of the Quran recitation.
