Surah Al Ghashiyah is the 88th chapter of the Quran and is often recited by Muslims for its powerful and thought-provoking message. In this chapter, Allah describes the Day of Judgment and the fate of those who have rejected the message of Islam. The name “Al Ghashiyah” means the overwhelming event, which signifies the Day of Judgment when all of humanity will stand before Allah and be held accountable for their actions.

The chapter begins with a reminder of the Day of Judgment, emphasizing the terror and awe that will overcome the disbelievers when they see the consequences of their actions. It serves as a warning to those who have turned away from the truth and chosen to follow their desires instead of obeying Allah’s commandments. The Surah then goes on to describe the rewards for those who have believed and obeyed Allah, promising them gardens of bliss and everlasting happiness in the Hereafter.

Overall, Surah Al Ghashiyah serves as a reminder to believers to remain steadfast in their faith and to seek forgiveness for their sins. It also serves as a warning to those who have strayed from the path of righteousness, urging them to turn back to Allah before it is too late. By reflecting on the verses of this chapter and internalizing its message, Muslims can strive to live a life of piety and righteousness in order to attain Allah’s mercy and forgiveness on the Day of Judgment.

Bismillah hir rahman nir raheem
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
1
Hal ataaka hadeesul ghaashiyah
Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?
2
Wujoohuny yawma ‘izin khaashi’ah
[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,
3
‘Aamilatun naasibah
Working [hard] and exhausted.
4
Taslaa naaran haamiyah
They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.
5
Tusqaa min ‘aynin aaniyah
They will be given drink from a boiling spring.
6
Laisa lahum ta’aamun illaa min daree’
For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant.
7
Laa yusminu wa laa yughnee min joo’
Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.
8
Wujoohuny yawma ‘izin naa’imah
[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure,
9
Lisa’yihaa raadiyah
With their effort [they are] satisfied.
10
Fee jannatin ‘aaliyah
In an elevated garden,
11
Laa tasma’u feehaa laaghiyah
Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.
12
Feehaa ‘aynun jaariyah
Within it is a flowing spring.
13
Feehaa sururum marfoo’ah
Within it are couches raised high,
14
Wa akwaabum mawzoo’ah
And cups put in place,
15
Wa namaariqu masfoofah
And cushions lined up.
16
Wa zaraabiyyu mabsoosah
And carpets spread around.
17
Afalaa yanzuroona ilalibili kaifa khuliqat
Then do they not look at the camels – how they are created?
18
Wa ilas samaaa’i kaifa rufi’at
And at the sky – how it is raised?
19
Wa ilal jibaali kaifa nusibat
And at the mountains – how they are erected?
20
Wa ilal ardi kaifa sutihat
And at the earth – how it is spread out?
21
Fazakkir innama anta Muzakkir
So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder.
22
Lasta ‘alaihim bimusaitir
You are not over them a controller.
23
Illaa man tawallaa wa kafar
However, he who turns away and disbelieves –
24
Fa yu’azzibuhul laahul ‘azaabal akbar
Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment.
25
Innaa ilainaaa iyaabahum
Indeed, to Us is their return.
26
Thumma inna ‘alainaa hisaabahum
Then indeed, upon Us is their account.
