What is the Meaning of Surah Al Fatiha?
Surah Al-Fatiha is a deep and powerful chapter. It opens the Quran and opens every prayer. The Surah is both a prayer and a guide. It has seven short but meaningful verses that summarize the message of the whole Quran.
- “Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem”
This verse reminds us to begin everything with the name of Allah. Ar-Rahman means Allah’s mercy is wide and for all. Ar-Raheem means His mercy is special for the believers. It sets the tone of kindness and love. - “Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil ‘Alamin”
All praise belongs to Allah alone. He is the Lord of everything that exists. Tafsir Ibn Kathir explains that Allah deserves full praise because He is the one who created, provides, and guides. - “Ar-Rahman-ir-Raheem”
This repeats Allah’s mercy to show how much He loves His creation and wants to forgive. - “Maliki Yawm-id-Deen”
Allah is the only Master of the Day of Judgment. No one else will have power or control. According to Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah will hold the earth and fold the heavens in His right hand on the Day of Judgment.” - “Iyyaka na’budu wa iyyaka nasta’een”
We worship only You and seek help only from You. This verse shows the heart of Islam — full trust and devotion to Allah alone. - “Ihdinas-Siraatal-Mustaqeem”
Guide us to the straight path — the path of truth, faith, and good character. - “Siraat allatheena an’amta ‘alayhim…”
We ask to follow those whom Allah blessed — like the Prophets, martyrs, and truthful. Not those who angered Allah or got lost. - “Ghayril-Maghdubi ‘Alayhim wa la-d-Daalleen”
“Not the path of those who earned Your anger, nor those who went astray.” This powerful ending teaches us what not to follow. According to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, the ones who earned Allah’s anger (al-maghdubi ‘alayhim) are those who knew the truth but still rejected it, such as many from Bani Israel. The ones who went astray (ad-daalleen) are those who lost the way due to ignorance — like some from the Christian nations.
