Surah Quraish is the 106th chapter of the Quran, revealed in Makkah. It has only four short verses but carries a strong message. This Surah was revealed to remind the tribe of Quraish about the blessings they received from Allah, especially safety and ease during their trade journeys. It encourages gratitude and worship of the One who protected them. The Surah is closely connected to the one before it, Surah Al-Fil, as both talk about Allah’s care for Quraish.

The translation shows how Allah made their trade journeys easy in winter and summer. In return, He commands them to worship Him alone—the Lord of the Kaaba who gave them food and peace.

What is Al‑Quraish?

Al‑Quraish (قُرَيْش) refers to the powerful tribe of Mecca who held custodianship over the Ka’bah. This short Makkan Surah recounts the blessings Allah bestowed upon them, calling them to gratitude and worship.

Verse 1 – “Liʾilāfi Quraish”

لِإِيلَافِ قُرَيْشٍ
For the accustomed security of the Quraish.

The term ‘ilāf here refers to unity, safety, and established routine—specifically highlighting the tribe’s secure status. Classical scholars connect this to the preceding Surah Al‑Fil: after Allah protected them from Abraha’s army, the Quraish were granted stability and unity. Others, like Maududi, see it as an expression of wonder: How astonishing is the peaceful cohesion of the Quraish!.

Verse 2 – “Īlāfihim rilata ash‑shitā’i waṣ‑ṣayf”

إِيلَافِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ الشِّتَاءِ وَالصَّيْفِ
Their accustomed security in the journey of winter and summer.

This verse refers to the two major annual trade expeditions: in winter to Yemen and in summer to Syria. Allah protected their caravans, granting economic prosperity and influence. This safeguarded travel elevated their social status across Arabian regions.

Verse 3 – “Falyʿbudū Rabbahādhā al‑Bayt”

فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَٰذَا الْبَيْتِ
So let them worship the Lord of this House.

Here, Allah commands them to worship Rabb al-Bayt—the Lord of the Ka’bah. The word Bayt grounds the spiritual tie between their material comfort and the sacredness of their central place of worship. Worship here means exclusive devotion, reflecting their dependence on divine generosity.

Verse 4 – “Alladhī aʿamahum min jūʿin wa āmānahum min khawf”

الَّذِي أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍ وَءَامَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْفٍ
Who fed them against hunger and gave them safety from fear.

This verse completes the reminder:

  • Feeding against hunger emphasizes that their survival and material well‑being stemmed from Allah’s provision.
  • Security from fear recalls how He protected them—from Abraha’s elephants in Surah Al‑Fil to safeguarding trade routes.

Thematic Context & Asbāb al‑Nuzūl

This Surah follows Surah Al‑Fil (The Elephant), together forming a two-part reminder: Allah destroyed Abraha’s army (Sura Fil) and then granted the Quraish economic stability and peace (Sura Quraish). Combined, they explain how divine intervention facilitated the emergence of Islam from this tribe.
