Surah An-Nas is the 114th and final chapter of the Quran. It has 6 short verses and is part of the Mu’awwidhatayn (the two protecting Surahs), along with Surah Al-Falaq. Meaning of Surah An-Naas (Sentence-by-Sentence)
1. قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ
Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.”
This verse teaches us to turn only to Allah for safety. The word Rabb means the One who looks after us. Allah is the caretaker of all people. This verse reminds us that our protection starts with seeking Allah’s help.
2. مَلِكِ النَّاسِ
The King of mankind.
Allah is not just the caretaker; He owns everything. He rules over all humans. He is the King, and no one else has control like Him.
3. إِلَٰهِ النَّاسِ
The God of mankind.
Allah is the only One we worship. He deserves our love, fear, and trust. These first three verses highlight Allah’s three roles—our Lord, King, and God.
4. مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ
From the evil of the whisperer who hides.
This verse talks about Shaytan. He whispers bad thoughts into our hearts, then runs away. Al-Khannas means the one who retreats when we remember Allah.
5. الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ
Who whispers into the hearts of mankind.
Shaytan does not speak aloud. He puts thoughts directly into our minds. He creates doubt, fear, jealousy, and sins.
6. مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ
From among jinn and mankind.
Whispers don’t only come from Shaytan. Evil can come from people too. This verse warns us to be careful of both kinds.
Hadith on Mu’awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas together. He called them Mu’awwidhatayn—the two Surahs of protection.
Hadith (Bukhari 5016):
“When the Prophet ﷺ was sick, he would recite these Surahs and blow over his body. If he couldn’t, Aisha (RA) would do it for him.”
These Surahs are a Sunnah for protection. We should use them regularly, just like the Prophet ﷺ did.
Recitation Times for Surah An-Nas
