بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ
فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ
إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ
Transliteration
Bismillāhir-Raḥmānir-Raḥīm
Innā a‘ṭaināka al-kawthar
Fa-ṣalli li-rabbika wanḥar
Inna shāni’aka huwa al-abtar
Translation
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Indeed, We have granted you [O Prophet] Al-Kausar (a river of abundance).
So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [for Him alone].
Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off (from all blessings).

What is the Meaning of Surah Kausar?
Surah Al-Kausar is one of the shortest yet most powerful chapters in the Quran. Revealed in Makkah, this Surah came at a time when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was facing mockery and emotional pain. His enemies would insult him, especially after the death of his son, claiming he had no legacy. Allah revealed this Surah as a response and as a source of comfort.

إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ
“Indeed, We have granted you Al-Kausar.”
This first verse is full of promise. The word “Inna” means “Indeed We,” showing Allah’s certainty and authority. “A‘ṭaināka” means “We have given you.” The word “Al-Kausar” refers to a river in Paradise, as explained in authentic Hadith:
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Al-Kausar is a river in Paradise. Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. There are birds in it with necks like the necks of camels.” (Sahih Muslim)
But the meaning goes beyond just the river. Al-Kausar also means abundance. It includes the many blessings Allah gave the Prophet ﷺ — honor, followers, knowledge, and a lasting legacy.

فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ
“So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [for Him alone].”
This verse shows how to respond to Allah’s blessings: through worship and sacrifice. “Fa-ṣalli” means “pray,” which refers to the daily Salah. “Li-rabbika” means “for your Lord,” showing sincerity. “Wanḥar” means “sacrifice,” and it refers to offering animals in worship, especially during Eid al-Adha.
It teaches that our worship must be only for Allah — not to show off or please others.

إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ
“Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.”
This verse was a direct reply to those who mocked the Prophet ﷺ. “Shāni’aka” means “your hater” or “enemy.” “Al-abtar” means “cut off,” meaning without any future or legacy.
Ironically, those who insulted the Prophet ﷺ are now forgotten, but his name is mentioned in every Adhan and prayer — fulfilling this verse in a powerful way.
