Surah Al-Ikhlas Transliteration and Translation

Surah Al-Ikhlas is the 112th chapter of the Quran. It is one of the shortest Surahs with only four verses. This Surah was revealed in Makkah and holds deep meaning about the oneness of Allah. Transliteration

Qul huwa Allāhu Aḥad
Allāhu aṣ-Ṣamad
Lam yalid wa lam yūlad
Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad

Translation in English (Sahih International):

Say, “He is Allah, [Who is] One,
Allah, the Eternal Refuge.
He neither begets nor is born,
Nor is there to Him any equivalent.”

Surah Al-Ikhlas (Word-by-Word Meaning and Explanation)

1. قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

Qul – Say: Allah commands the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to openly declare this truth. It shows that Tawheed (belief in one God) must be clearly stated without hesitation.
Huwa – He is: Refers to Allah, placing emphasis on His presence and identity.
Allāhu Aḥad – Allah is One: The word Aḥad means absolute oneness. Not just one in number, but one in being, essence, power, and worship. No one is like Him in any way.

According to a Hadith in Sahih Muslim (Book 4, Hadith 1362), the Prophet ﷺ said: “By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, it is equal to one-third of the Quran.” This shows its deep theological weight.

2. اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ

Allāhu aṣ-Ṣamad – Allah is As-Samad: The word As-Samad means the One who everyone turns to in need. He is independent and self-sufficient. He does not rely on anyone, but all creation relies on Him for guidance, help, and sustenance.

Ibn Abbas (RA) explained As-Samad as: “The Master who is perfect in His knowledge, power, mercy, and all attributes. He has no internal organs, eats not, drinks not, and sleeps not.” (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

3. لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ

Lam yalid – He does not beget: Allah has no children. This refutes the belief of some who claim that Allah has a son (like the Christians or pagans).
Wa lam yūlad – Nor was He born: Allah has no origin or beginning. He was not created, born, or produced. This rejects the idea that He came from anything.

This part of the Surah strongly denies all human-like qualities being attributed to Allah.

4. وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad – And there is none equal to Him:
The word kufuwan means comparable, similar, or equal. There is no one like Allah – not in attributes, knowledge, actions, or form. He is unique in every sense.

The Prophet ﷺ loved this Surah deeply. In Sahih Bukhari (Hadith 6643), a man recited Surah Al-Ikhlas repeatedly, and when asked why, he said: “It describes the Most Merciful, and I love to recite it.” The Prophet replied: “Your love for it has earned you Paradise.”
